Welcome to A.L.P.H.A. Pets & Food Bank Inc!
Every year in the United States alone, it is estimated that 3 to 4 MILLION companion animals are killed in overcrowded shelters. 3 to 4 million. Can you picture how many that is? If not, you should easily be able to picture 7 dogs or cats. That's how many PER MINUTE are killed in shelters. Every Day. 24 hours a day. 7 days a week. 365 days a year.
Every minute, 7 animals are injected, gassed, heart stuck, shot, or some other horrendous method is used to kill them. Their bodies placed in bags and tossed out for landfill fodder. There HAS to be a better way!
Can we as a country become NO KILL? YES! As long as the root issue of the problem is addressed head on! We do not believe the answer is more fosters and more rescues. Although these help, and we couldn't function without them, they are just a band aide for the real problem. The REAL answer is FEWER ANIMALS! The only way to get there is spaying and neutering!
A.L.P.H.A. - All Loved Pets Have Alterations!
Our mission at A.L.P.H.A. Pets & Food Bank is first and foremost to assist individuals financially with the cost of having their pet altered. This will prevent unwanted litters from being born. It will prevent animals which get loose, or are allowed to roam, from getting pregnant or impregnating another, resulting in an unwanted litter. These scenarios can and do lead to animals being dumped into shelters as somebody elses problem to deal with. Doesn't it make more sense to PREVENT litters from being born, rather than deal with them after the fact, often times by simply killing them because there's no place for them to go?
The second part of our mission is to run a small food bank. Sometimes people find themselves in situations, through no fault of their own, where they can no longer afford to feed their pet, and have to relinquish it to a shelter. These animals, as owner turn ins, are FIRST to go on the euthanasia list. Don't be fooled for one minute that the pound will make an effort to find a new loving home for their pet. More often than not, that animal will be in a bag before the owner gets three blocks from the pound. It's a fact. Municipal pounds are not required to keep owner turn ins any length of time. They can be disposed of immediately. And often are. The purpose of the food bank will be to help those people who find themselves in the position of being forced to give up their pet, but would be able to keep them with a little temporary support in the way of food.
